I embrace change, probably too easily. As I've matured (OK, *if* I've matured) I've had to learn not to bolt and upheave my life at the slightest provocation or dissatisfaction. I'd almost always rather try something new than stick with what I have (the big exception being my husband of 14 years).
So when I see the Death card, my reaction is usually, "Oh goody, what's next?" :-)
I have the Haindl Tarot, which is a strange deck with lots of mythological references (luckily I have a big book that explains it all, not just the little white pamphlet). The Death card shows a calm sea or lake with a ferryman in a long thin boat, some green grass, a peacock head, a birch tree branch with one leaf coming off but with green buds on it, and a skeletal hand holding a scythe.
So what are the other two BigBehemoth cards--The Tower, I'm guessing, and what else?
Laughing... I know your husband is relieved! Oh I love the Haindl depiction of Death you describe. I'll have to pull that one out.
The other BigBadBehemoth (have to check that word because I am sure I'm butchering the spelling) is the Devil. So yes to the Tower and add in the Devil and Death for the big baddies of Tarot.
I'll be writing about both of those at some point. :)
I totally agree with Jeri. When I see the Death card, I am delighted! I mostly use the Motherpeace deck. In this deck, Death is symbolic of death-transformation-rebirth. It shows a snake shedding its skin, a very compelling representation of transformation. I think the "scarier" card is the Tower, since, it indicates chaotic, wild, unpredictable, life-altering change.
I've been pulling the Death card a lot since I've started reading regularly. I still don't know for certain what it refers to, in my case. My life seems to be pretty constant, so I'm guessing it's referring to after my husband graduates from school. I'm sure there will be a lot of changes then!
I like the Death card- it's one of my birth cards. When it comes up in a reading for a client I read it as change, but not any change. It's just like Death-- sometimes you see it coming and get to plan, sometimes it's sudden and unexpected. Sometimes it's smooth, sometimes it it messy. Sometimes it's a release that puts you in a better spot, sometimes it is very hard and drags you kicking and screaming. But the constant is that this change is final and irrevocable-- like death. So, I read what kind of death/change it will be through context and card position.
Wahine, the snake symbology is one I just love. I was working on my class and one of the participants had a card that featured snakes. I talked about the whole shedding transformation piece! Synchronicity!
Don't know what to make of the Death card in Tarot. I don't think it's anything that scares me, but then I've not been the recipient of that particular card in my one and only reading performed by...You, sweet girl!!
I suppose like some, I like to think I'm ready, then there are times when Death scares the bejesus out of me. I'm not quite done with the everyday life. Then again, when you get to my age, (69) you begin to take life as it comes and whatever happens, happens. Not much we can do about Death coming to your door, is there? We could fight, but to what end? Death will win anyway. So, we make the most of life while we're here and perhaps, embrace Death when he/she shows up to claim what is rightfully his/hers. Then again, again...perhaps I'm not at all sure what I'm talking about.
In the long run, Love ya, gal. Sometime when the moon is right, I'll ask you for another reading. Never did get back to you on the mess moving to Wyoming caused my Outlook Express e-mail. Take care!
Hi - this Death card looks familiar but I can't quite place it. What deck is it from and why do you chose it for professional readings?? Thanks! ~Ann78220
Hi Ann! My alt tags aren't working, darn it. You should be able to mouse over it to see that it is the Death card from the World Spirit Tarot. I like the ethnicity and color of this deck.
Ginny: Never did get back to you on the mess moving to Wyoming caused my Outlook Express e-mail.
*amused* I live in Laramie, WY. Don't see many people anywhere online that lives in Wyoming...
Arwen: You should be able to mouse over it to see that it is the Death card from the World Spirit Tarot.
I think what I like most about the card is the phoenix rising from the pyre the person's body is burning on. Life from death, rebirth, change, for sure. I like it!
And the Death card in this deck is one of the things that sold me on it. If you like unusual death cards, you should look up Fradella's Adventure Tarot. I really like his interpretation.
The deck is based on Frank's superhero world. If you can find the Chariot.. wow! I love comic book art so I am very drawn to this. He has a new deck coming out this Fall I think -- Underwater Tarot. The artwork is very different.
Yeah, the Chariot is pretty cool. The Hanging Man doesn't seem like much sacrifice... The World is neat from a Kabbalah point of view, having the four faces of the Cherubim in the corners. And I like the Two of Blades.
Death just came up in a single-card draw I did today for a friend...When I flipped it over I immediately said, "Uh-oh..." but then remembered that Death isn't quite the freaky card it may seem at first, even though Big Change can certainly be freaky! The Death card I "like," if that's the right word, is the one in the Greenwood deck....it's scary yet hopeful at the same time, very much about rebirth and the cycle of life.
Munin's Kiss, I think the Hanged Man gets the point across still and part of that is in the story that goes with that character. You see, he is the Insomnia. He can never sleep.
MaidenElf, I'm so glad you see Death that way. And there are several Death cards I like. If you read back in these comments you will see Munin's Kiss and I discussing various Death cards. :)

My life seems to be pretty constant
Maybe it's referring for a need for change in some area, rather than predicting it.

cheers to change-ceal

Selaura, I'd have to agree with Muninn's Kiss. Sounds like you are being told you to to change something that you don't want to. Good luck!
Muninn's Kiss, I'm so glad you stopped by. I agree with your estimation!
Ceal! How nice to see you here! I love your point about it being a constant. It's hard for those who hate change to accept that! :)

I think if we are honest, Death scares all of us at some point. And I think you are right on target! Love that you are visiting!

OH! Thank you!! I've been doing a search and hadn't found it yet, and just now see that you've answered my question!! ~ Ann

LOL! I'll let Ginny know. She's a doll.

Found an image of it. That is a unique one. I think I like the imagery, but I don't like the art style that much. I do like the Star, though.
